First ever Recovery Dance on Long Island set for October 10th

The Long Island Recovery Association (LIRA) is pleased to announce its first annual “Rock N Recovery” dance and celebration to be held on Saturday, October 10, 2009 from 6:00PM-10:00PM at the Deer Park Community Center. The event – one of Long Island’s few sober events – is designed to commemorate National Recovery Month and celebrate the miracle of recovery with great food, great music and dancing.

“LIRA has been at the forefront of the national recovery community movement for nearly 10 years,” said the group’s president Richard Buckman.  “This year we invite our families, friends and communities to join us in a festive celebration of the many victories over active addiction. May our LIRA beacon continue to illuminate the path to freedom for many more to come.”

Rock N’ Recovery sponsors include the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), Seafield Center, the Kenneth Peters Center for Recovery, Pederson Krag, Bridge Back to Life, the Long Island Center for Recovery, Harmony Recovery Homes, Industrial Medicine Associates and dozens of other recovery-oriented organizations.

“Too much of Long Island’s social scene revolves around the use of alcohol and other drugs,” said LICADD executive director and LIRA board member Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds. “Long Island needs more sober events and this is a great opportunity to create some other options, and celebrate our progress and resolve in addressing addiction,” he added.

Founded in January 2000, the Long Island Recovery Association is a grassroots organization of people concerned about the rights of both the suffering addict and the recovering community. We bring together recovering addicts and alcoholics, along with families, friends and allies, to advocate for the rights and needs of those affected by addiction. Through education and advocacy, LIRA works to de-stigmatize alcoholism and other diseases of addiction, achieve treatment parity for addicted persons seeking help and ensure that a compassionate and well-informed understanding of the nature of illnesses of addiction becomes the norm among legislators, institutions, family members and society in general.

The Deer Park Community Center is located at 41 Homer Avenue in Deer Park and admission to the Rock N’ Recovery dance is just $10.00 per person, payable in advance or at the door.
